The story behind the story….
Who were the Mayflower passengers before they were pilgrims? Where did they come from? England has a long history of migrations and invasions. Were the Pilgrim’s ancestors Anglo-Saxons, Normans or Vikings? This book will use traditional genealogy and DNA to answer those questions and more.
The DNA of the Mayflower descendants will lead us on a path of discovery that will first allow us to confirm the genetic identity of each Pilgrim and then open a door to the past, before they sailed.
Following the DNA
The DNA falls into three Mayflower categories: descendants, genetic cousins and genetic ancestors. These categories will be defined in more detail in the book. The descendant's DNA gives us the ability to confirm the genetic identity of each Pilgrim and gives us deep ethnicity. The identity allows us to find genetic cousins in England, giving us the location of each Pilgrim's ancestral city and village. When we expand the search for cousins beyond England, we get a view of genetic ancestors, tribes and migrations across Europe.
The book will identify the DNA and trace the genetic ancestry of the following Mayflower families: Alden, Billington, Bradford, Brewster, Chilton, Cooke, Doty, Eaton, Fuller, Hopkins, Howland, Mullins, Rogers, Samson, Soule, Standish, Tilley, Warren, White and Winslow.
Looking for Descendants
For this project to be a success, I'm looking for both direct paternal line and maternal line descendants of the Pilgrims. If you have a solid genealogy back to the Mayflower, I would like to include your story. It would be great if you already have your y-DNA or mitochondrial DNA tested.
Contents
In addition to Mayflower ancestry, the book will illustrate the basics of genetic genealogy. How can we tell if two people are related? Where does the ethnicity come from? How do we know where someone's ancestors lived 500, 1,000 or 2,000 years ago? Why do the Anglo-Saxons, Celts, Normans and Vikings matter in a discussion about Pilgrims?
Fieldnotes
There will be a tremendous amount of data and information that gets generated during the research phase of this book. All of the info is valuable, but not all of it will make it into the book. The "members-only" Fieldnotes section of the companion website will contain all of the background and detail the progress for those who want to follow along. Even after the book is published, new information will be added as more is learned about the Mayflower Pilgrims and their DNA.
What will be produced?
This full-color book will be produced in a digital format, a paperback edition and a limited hardcover edition. There will be a companion website with behind the scenes details exclusive to members. A presentation for genealogy and history conferences is also planned.
I'd be happy to help. Direct ancestor of William Brewster three times through my mother's side of the family. He's my 12th great grandfather.
ReplyDeleteYes, I would love to participate! What info do you need from me?
ReplyDeleteI don't know why I came up as "unknown"...LOL! My name is Courtney a Hildebrand, I was the previous post.
ReplyDeleteWhat area of the country? My great grandmother was a Hildebrand. She's from Louisiana but we have her line traced back to the early 1800's in SC/ Alabama and then it goes dead.
DeleteVery interesting. I descend from Chilton, Warren and Soule
ReplyDeleteWarren Descendants. Would be interested!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to participate. Warren, Tilley, others.

I/We (my Uncle, of the same lineages providing a Y) would be thrilled to be a part of your origin hunt! (We were just recently included, in new up and coming 5 volume collection, with our multiple relationships to the House of Plantagenet and our lineages connecting to many of the Barons which sealed the Magna Carta, which was researched also, by a professional genealogist, who also, collaborated with another famed genealogist who, specializes in the Plantagenet lineages), so, our lines are solid.
;-)
Looking forward to your response.
Forgot to mention, we also, hold: White, Standish, Warren, Rogers lineages.
ReplyDeleteI would be interested. I'm a descendant of John Howland and Peter Browne.
ReplyDeleteHi folks, thanks for all the interest. I will be launching a Kickstarter project tomorrow. Every little bit helps and everyone gets something in return. You can post your questions here or on my Before They Sailed FB page. Thanks

DeleteCan you give me an update on the research regarding Mayflower descendents? And this project?
I am female and a certified Mayflower direct descendent of Miles Standish (on my father's side). An extensive genealogy has been done by my father, who recently passed away. I am interested in Miles Standish's genealogy, as there has always been a question of his place of birth and genealogy. An uncle on my father's side is alive, as well.
My email: Lilmslady101@aol.com
I am a direct descendant of George Soule. My son of George Soule and Francis Cooke.
ReplyDeleteThomas Rogers is my 10th great grandfather and I would like to help Reggie. GR_DEUCE@YAHOO.COM
ReplyDeleteI would like to participate. John Alden and Priscilla Mullins, who both traveled on the Mayflower and then were married, are my 9th great grandparents.
ReplyDeleteNola they where mine too
DeleteI would love to be a part of the study. I am a descendant of Edward Doty.
ReplyDeleteI am also a descendent of Edward Doty 9th GGf. and Rollo Duke of Normandy 36th GGF. Which DNA is the best to use? I did Ancestry but am disappointed and looking for a more complete study.
DeleteI would love to be part of the study and am in process of documenting multiple lines on both sides. I have my raw dna data through Ancestry, one of my sisters from 23andme and was going to have my brother and one of his sons done (all male line of Standishes). Maternal side Doty, Paternal side Hopkins, Cooke, Eaton, Standish
ReplyDeleteInterested in participating. I'm a member of the Mayflower Society with proven line to Brewster although genealogist told me I'm descended from eight on the Mayflower including Brewster.
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a Mayflower Society-proven descendant of John Howland and the Tilleys. He is eager to be involved in this project. How will he receive additional information/details/instructions?
ReplyDeleteHi Frances,
DeleteThere is more info at the Kickstarter project site - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1950257183/before-they-sailed-mayflower-dna
Thanks,
Mike
Or post here, if you have any specific questions.
DeleteMy project is now live, please see the Kickstarter Link at the top of the post. Thanks, Mike
ReplyDeleteIs "Reward #6" a $500 donation to your Kickstarter campaign? Is that how a Mayflower descendant can be included in your project?
ReplyDeleteReward #6 is a donation that would feature the descendant in the book by name if they wished. All other descendants would be anonymous. As part of reward #6 I would provide a test kit if one hasn't already been taken or provide an upgrade of an existing test. I would also work with the descendant to tell their Mayflower story.
DeleteI just found out i was a descendant The family was lost after charles Simmons from West Virginia son Thomas Simmons a texas ranger was killed early his wife was half Cherokee not much English had a son named Alan Simmons who had Jessie they lived a poor life the Oklahoma dust bowl then headed to Bakersfield

I would be happy to help. I descend from George Soule and already had mtDNA done, as well as Family Finder, Ancestry, and 23andMe.
ReplyDeleteCindy
I'd be very happy to help. I'm a proven descendant of Stephen Hopkins and his first wife Mary, through their son Giles. I have already been DNA tested with Ancestry.com and Family Tree DNA, both Family Finder testing and full mtDNA.
ReplyDeleteHello, My name is Ben Taylor. (I am Ashley's dad.) We too, are (presumably) descendants of Stephen Hopkins and wife Mary through Constance. Through Ancestry DNA testing and analysis with GEDmatch I have found that my sister and I share a stretch of overlapping DNA with three other (mostly unrelated) Ancestry DNA matches that also claim descent from Stephen & Mary. We have a number of DNA matches with people who share a single stretch of DNA with the five of us and also with each other, which means that they also share the same DNA. While it is unlikely that your Hopkins DNA is the same as mine, i would like to see if you are one of my matches. What is your AncestryDNA name? Mine is BT (admin. by sandiphillps). Thanks, Ben
DeleteI have proof of descent from both William Brewster and Stephen Hopkins, lines coming in from both of my parents. I am also a professional genealogist who has been using DNA as a research tool in my client work. Tests I have completed are (1) AncestryDNA/autosumnal and (2) 23andMe. Please feel free to contact me at bethfmcc@bfmresearch.com with any additional questions or information if you believe I am a good candidate for your study. - BFM

ReplyDeleteHi Deb,

Thanks,
Mike
I'm interested in participating. I descend from the Billingtons. I've had AncestryDNA/autosomal done thus far.

ReplyDeleteI don't think my comment went through so I'm repeating...I'm a direct descendant of Stephen Hopkins from both of my parents. Giles and Constance the children also. I've had my DNA done for the Journey of Man project but should I have my brother do it instead?
ReplyDeleteI am a "proven" Brewster descendant and would like to participate in the project - I have tested DNA via Ancestry and 23andme.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. I'm a direct descendant of Thomas Rogers through his son Joseph, on my maternal grandfather's side of the family.

I am also more distantly related to Richard More, Francis Cooke, William Brewster, William Mullins, Isaac Allerton, Henry Sampson, Edward Winslow, Thomas Rogers, and Samuel Fuller. I have not done a DNA test, but both of my parents and my paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather have done Ancestry DNA (autosomal). I would love to be a part of this project!
ReplyDeleteI am interested! I am a direct descendant of Stephen Hopkins and Constance Hopkins. Have never done the DNA. What do I need to do? I can't find any information.

ReplyDeleteI would love to be apart of your research. I am a decedent of Stephen Hopkins & Giles Hopkins, and recently found a tree link to William Brewster. My mother was 1 of 6 children (5 are still alive) I am 1 of 18 grand children. My children are 3 of 32 great grandchildren. Plus there are now at least 18 great great grandchildren. I know other family members have also said they would be interested if I got more info for them. My aunt has proven lineage to Dr Theophilus Hopkins for the DAR, and I am in the process of getting the line with the Mayflower group (GMSD) I have been told that both lines are very strong.
(my account is under my husband) I am Andrea
I would be interested in being part of your research. I am decended from;
ReplyDeleteJohn Alden (8th ggf), Priscilla Mullins (8th ggm), Elizabeth Rogers (8th ggm),
Kenelm Winslow (9th ggf), William Brewster (12th g Uncle), and Samuel Fuller (8th g Uncle)
I have had my DNA done through Ancestry, My lines are all sourced. I have uploaded my results to Gedmatch, but have not a gedcom file yet.
Let me know if you are interested. Thanks, Myrna
Alden, Mullens, Browne, Snow (?), Samson, Possibly White on father's side and Standish. There are a few, and will verify the rest, if those seem of interest. Christine B
ReplyDeleteHi....I just found this site , so if it isn't too late , I would love to be a part of it. My Mayflower ancestor is William BRADFORD.
ReplyDeleteBrenda M.
I would like to find out if I am genetically linked to William Brewster who sailed on the Mayflower. He came from the Doncaster in Yorkshire area and I come from Sheffield Yorkshire onlY 25 miles away. I was born Margaret Brewster. Brewster is not a common name in this part of Uk or all over UK but is in USA. I live in Belgium now bit would lo e tp have a dna test to verify if I am part of tbis famous family. How do I go about it
ReplyDeleteSuspecting that I have a direct maternal line to Mary Chilton, I used Family Tree DNA's mtDNA test to try to confirm. I was informed of 2 exact matches, one of which has a proven direct maternal line through one of Mary Chilton's daughters. My line goes through another of Mary's daughters. So, Mary Chilton is the first common ancestor for me and the other lady. If my data would be helpful to you, I would be happy to participate.

ReplyDeleteGreetings! I have John Alden as my 11th Granpap! I also had Mayflower Society members as cousins. I did the Ancestry DNA as well. If I can help in this project I will.

Interesting project! I'm happy to help. Direct descendant, 11th generation from William Brewster. Some DNA testing done already at Family Tree.
ReplyDeleteI can prove my lineage to the following Mayflower passengers - William Brewster, John Howland, John Tilley, and John Billington. I'm a member of Mayflower Society under each of these men. Would love to be involved in this interesting project if I can help. I've only done DNA through Ancestry at this point.

ReplyDeleteI am a member od gsmd and a descendant of Richard Warren. I believe I have 2 and possibly three other lines but I am too exhausted from the Warren line research to look into others just yet. I had my dna test with Ancestry.
ReplyDeleteHi there,
ReplyDeleteI am in the process of confirming my link to the Howlands and the Tilley's.
I don't see any updated blogs or information related to this page, so are you still in the research phase? Can you give any additional info regarding your mention of the "members only" Fieldnotes section on the companion website?? I am not finding this anywhere...??
I/m wondering why the Mayflower Society doesn't taking DNA as proof of membership? The police will put you in jail for life as it it REAL proof vs. misspelled names, incomplete forms, burned up paper records or destroyed in hurricanes or whatever. Paper records with slim census information at best and such is much less reliable. It is the 21st century and it should not be an elitist membership process where only those few with the right ancestors and paper trail can qualify.

ReplyDeleteMy relative John Jones married Anna Vassall - Captain John Vassall's daughter. Anna Russell was the mother of William Vassall and Anna Vassall. William Vassall's daughter Judith Vassall married Resolved White who was an original passenger on the Mayflower with his parents William and Susanna White. His other brother was Samuel Vassall and William's wife was Anna King. Captain John Vassall 11 would make a great multi continent DNA study ! Most of my research came from other trees I found on Ancestry and Family but they appear to be the same - Which made my work easier -

ReplyDeleteI'm a descendant of Peregrine White but my line is not recognized by the Mayflower Society. I submitted my ancestry to the Mayflower Society as follows:
ReplyDelete1. Name of your Mayflower Pilgrim Ancestor: Peregrine White
2. Son/Daughter: Jonathan White 2. Married: Margaret Alexander
3. Son/Daughter: Alexander White 3. Married:Mary McMurtrie
4. Son/Daughter: Samuel White 4. Married: Jane Stewart
5. Son/Daughter: James White 5. Married: Elizabeth Hamilton
6. Son/Daughter: Samuel White 6. Married: Mary Wright
7. Son/Daughter: Andrew White 7. Married: Florence Williams
8. Son/Daughter: Joseph White 8. Married: Stella Pryor (my great grandparents)
This is the response I received:
"We are delighted to learn of your interest in the Mayflower Society. We have received your Preliminary Review Form and have attempted to determine the best approved lineage paper that we might have which follows your stated lineage from Mayflower passenger William White. Unfortunately, the Mayflower Society does not accept that Jonathan White (son of Peregrine White) married Margaret Alexander. The most up to date work on the descendants of William White is Mayflower Families through Five Generations, Vol. 13: William White. According to this book, Jonathan White married twice, first to Hester Nickerson, and then to Elizabeth -----. There is also a comment that "the authors found no evidence to support the claim of Roscoe R. White in White Family Record...that Jonathan White m. 8 Aug. 1708 Margaret Elizabeth Alexander. ...... The (Mayflower) Society does not accept this lineage" (p. 17). Our lineage files are consistent with this and there are no lineage papers in our files through a marriage of Jonathan White and a Margaret Alexander.
It is certainly not the most enjoyable part of the lineage reviews to have to inform people that they have proposed a Mayflower lineage that is not known to be correct, but we can only report what the research has shown to be true. If you feel you have discovered evidence, in primary records such as vital records, wills, probate records, deeds, town records, church records etc, that clearly proves Jonathan White m. Margaret Alexander, please contact the Mayflower Society in the state of your choice and they will review your findings."
I have 2 uncles that are direct male descendants, would their DNA offer the proof needed? I have done my dna through 23andme.
Seems that "Elizabeth" the second wife of William may be "Margaret Elizabeth Alexander." You'll have to find historical reference to her, perhaps in her father's will, or a court proceeding, if you cannot find the marriage record, or birth or baptisism record of her child.
DeleteI am a Direct descendent of William White through Peregrine White my 8th great grandfather. Would like to contribute any continue on this journey of discovery.

ReplyDeleteThe only service that I would recommend is Family Tree DNA. You would need a 37 marker Y-DNA test (or a 67 marker test is better)
